Dry indoor air gets filed under winter, but the cause is mechanical rather than seasonal: forced-air heating strips moisture out in January and air conditioning does exactly the same thing in July. The symptoms are recognisable either way — waking with a raw throat, static off every door handle, skin that will not settle, a cough that eases only once you sit up. An ultrasonic unit answers it by vibrating water into a fine mist instead of boiling it, which is why it runs cool and why you can sleep through the sound of it.
What it is for
Two point two litres is sized for one bedroom overnight at a sensible setting; run it flat out and it empties considerably sooner. Mist output adjusts, the nozzle turns through a full circle so you can aim it away from a wall or a bedside book, and it cuts out on its own when the tank empties rather than running dry. One caveat is worth knowing before you buy: ultrasonic humidifiers atomise whatever is dissolved in the water along with the water itself, so on a hard supply you will find fine white mineral dust on nearby surfaces unless you fill it with distilled or filtered water.
Best for: bedrooms and nurseries through a heating season, and for anyone who wakes with a dry throat every morning between October and March.

Common questions
How long will one tank run?
About a night at a low-to-medium output in a bedroom of ordinary size. Turned up to maximum, 2.2 litres goes appreciably faster — roughly half the time, depending on how dry the room was to begin with.
Where is the white dust coming from?
From your tap water, not from the machine. Every ultrasonic humidifier throws dissolved minerals into the air along with the mist, and distilled or filtered water removes the problem entirely. It is not a fault, and no ultrasonic model is immune to it.
How often does it need cleaning?
Rinse and refill the tank daily rather than topping up water that has been standing, and descale it with vinegar once a week. Water left sitting in any humidifier grows biofilm, and a humidifier’s whole job is to put what is in the tank into the air you breathe.
