Four wide slots and a digital countdown you can actually read

Nobody has ever had a problem with a toaster’s heating element. The problem is the dial — a number between one and six that corresponds to nothing in particular, and no way of telling whether ten seconds are left or ninety. A digital countdown removes the guesswork completely: the display tells you where you are, and level four means precisely the same thing tomorrow morning as it did this one.
What it is for
Four slots, six browning levels, and the three buttons that make a toaster workable in a kitchen where breakfast is a rush: defrost, for bread taken straight out of the freezer; bagel, which drives the inner elements hard and the outer ones gently so the cut face browns while the crust merely warms; and cancel, for the times you misjudged it. The slots are the wide sort, so a bagel half or a thick slice of sourdough goes in without being wedged. The crumb tray slides out of the bottom, which beats holding the whole appliance upside down over a bin.
Best for: households of three or more, bagel eaters, and anyone whose bread lives in the freezer rather than in a bread bin.

Common questions
Will thick or artisan slices fit?
The slots are the wide type and take bagel halves and thick-cut sourdough without forcing. A very tall slice off a country loaf may stand proud at the top and need turning to brown the last inch of it.
What does the bagel button change?
It splits the power between the elements: full heat on the inner pair facing the cut side, much less on the outer pair. The soft face toasts while the crust stays soft rather than turning into a shell.
Does the outside get hot?
The shell is stainless steel and it warms through a cycle, as every metal-bodied toaster does. Move it by the base if you have to move it, and give it a minute after it pops before you put it away.
