The blending foot unclips from the motor body, and that one detail decides how pleasant the thing is to own: the dirty end goes straight under the tap while the end full of electronics stays dry on the counter. The blades are 304 stainless, the same grade used for cutlery. Colours span roughly a $15 to $27 band, and the same family runs up to an 800W three-in-one that adds a whisk and a chopper bowl if you want the wand to cover more ground.
Best for: soup blended in the pan it was cooked in, smoothies, baby food, pesto and sauces — and for kitchens with no spare worktop for a full-size blender.

Common questions
Can I put it straight into a hot pan?
Yes, and that is the entire reason to own one. Take the pan off the heat, get the blade guard fully under the surface before you press the button, and keep it there — lift it while it is running and it will redecorate the kitchen.
Does it crush ice?
In small quantities, suspended in liquid, it will. Ice is punishing on any handheld motor though, so for frozen drinks reach for frozen fruit instead of cubes and the blender will last considerably longer.
How is the 800W set different?
More motor, and two more jobs: the three-in-one adds a balloon whisk and a chopper bowl, so it whips and dices as well as blends. The 500W is the blending wand on its own, and it costs correspondingly less.
